Ramadhan is a sacred fasting month for Moslems. For 30 days, Moslem have to fasting from 4 am until 6 pm, almost 14 hours. Started with early breakfast, called Sahur and break the fast at the end. In order not to make stomach, breaking the fast keep off spicy and meal, but only eat sweet cake and drink something sweet. The most favorite drink is kolak.
Kolak is sweet drink made from palm sugar, coconut milk with extra pandanus leaves for taste. It smells strong and sweet. For another flavour jackfruit is usually added. Yams or bananas may be added to kolak, as filling flavour. Although, it's very easy to make kolak on Ramadhan, other that it is difficult to find it. First you boil water, second put palm sugar and coconut milk into boiling water, then pandanus leaves or jackfruit. You must stir it slowly, and then put yams or bananas for the last flavor. Covered the pot, let it cook for 15-20 minutes. Some people put cloves to make the kolak fresher.
The best serve for kolak is in chill. The unique taste of palm sugar makes kolak stay in original taste for 2-3 days. At evening, it's the perfect day to taste cold kolak. You may prepare another snack, known as 'jajan pasar', traditional snack last only 1 day, as nogosari, lemper, cindil, getuk, etc. You can find jajan pasar only in the morning in the traditional market or food vendor. People in Jogja love jajan pasar much for snack at morning and evening as a tea time. In Ramadhan, only few sell jajan pasar, but you can still find it in the nearest market.
Finding kolak on Ramadhan, it's very easy. A line on the street, you can see lots food vendor selling kolak and another drink, as young coconut and ice syrup. It price is 2,000 - 3,000 rupiahs ($ 0,2-0,3) for a cup. There's a unique place you can find kolak and lots of food for breaking the fast, as Kampung Kauman (Kauman Kampong), Pasar Kotagede (Kotagede Market) and Bunderan UGM (UGM Boulevard). During breaking the fast, you can meet lot of people there. So, if you interested to taste kolak in that place, please be patient wait until the time.
