Since November 4, the Danger Zone has been extended to 20 km. from the crater, causing thousands of evacuees to again be moved to safer zones in the towns of Yogya, Magelang, Klaten and Boyolali. Meanwhile, the mountain's ash rains are reported to have spread west reaching Ciamis and Bogor in West Java.
Untill this morning, Yogya airport authorities have decided to close the airport for another 24 hours to clear the runway from volcanic material. All planes are meantime rerouted to Solo and Semarang, some 1,5 - 3 hours drive from Yogya.
President Yudhoyono has declared the situation a national disaster and the president has put the country's national disaster management agency in charge of the relief operation.
Surono, the head of Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency, says the volcano's activity is coming from much deeper than in eruptions in 1997 and 2006.
"Before, the magmatic chamber is very shallow and the volume not so high, not so big," Surono noted. "But in this period of eruption in 2010, the magmatic chamber is very big and very deep, so it's why the eruption is so big."
Because of the thick volcanic ash and thick, the streets in most cities in Sleman, Yogyakarta Municipality, Magelang, Klaten, Muntilan, Magelang and Boyolali are still occuring.
Tips to avoid the danger of ash are:
- Follow the safe distance setted by the government which is 20 km from Mount Merapi.
- Avoid outdoor activities, such as running and so. Stay at home is better to avoid the volcanic ash and, where appropriate outdoor activities, use masks, long shirt or jacket.
- If there is a complaint, it must be addressed immediately. Do not delay treatment.
- When you feel ill, immediately consult to the hospital.
