The core of festival is held in Borobudur Temple, an ancient holy spot that was built in the 9th century A.D. This religious festival is held on the evening of the full moon day in the month of May. 

Borobudur Temple is one of the prime pilgrimage spots of Buddhist. This holy place of the Buddhists is also one of the major tourist destinations of Indonesia. There is a huge Buddhist temple over here. The walls of the temple are adorned with stone carvings depicting kings, priests, warriors, processions, elephants and dancers and mortals. The carvings of the top depict people who followed Buddha,s teachings.

The Vesak Festival at Borobudur consists of a pilgrimage to this holy place. The monks dressed in saffron robes walk for five miles from Mendut to Borobudur. They carry candles and orange flowers as offerings with them. The procession starts in the evening. As soon as the soft white light of the moon illuminates the exterior of the temple, the monks light the candle and start chanting holy chants. They also pray and meditate at the same time. This holy ceremony is marked by its spirituality and tranquility. The true essence of the Buddhist religion can be easily understood from this Buddhist festival.
