Mount Bromo is one of three monolithic peaks situated in the Tengger Massif caldera in the Bromo-Tergger-Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo which stands tall at 2329 m is surrounded by the Laut Pasir (sea of sand) of fine volcanic sand,  is one of the most iconic mountain in Indonesia. 

Mount Bromo is still one of the most active volcanoes in the world with a crater inside that keeps spewing off white sulphurous smoke. The magnificent of Mt Bromo will not disappoint with its spectacular views and dramatic landscapes. Myth has it that Mount Bromo is significant to the Tengger native people who believe that the site is where their brave prince sacrificed his life for his family. To appease the Gods, the people will offer food and money by throwing it into the crater of the volcano once a year during annual of Kasada (or Kasodo) festival.

The views of Mount Bromo's landscape are best just as the sun rises at Mount Pananjakan that usualy  organized tours by 4WD Jeep are available. Unfortunately, this means a 3.30am wake-up and braving near-freezing temperatures in the dark while waiting for sunrise. Hike up Mount Penanjakan in time to catch the sunrise over Mount Bromo at 5.30am. The view is simply amazing and you will hear only the sound of camera shots that capture the moment when travelers can not be obtained elsewhere. Currently incredible sunrise where you'll see the foreground of Mount Semeru which emits smoke in the distance and the sun shining brightly up into the sky.

Most travelers visit Bromo from the base town of Probolinggo. The journey from Surabaya to Probolinggo takes about three hours driving. The best time to visit Bromo in June - August where there is less rain but more tourists. August is also the month for the Kesada / Kesodo festival for the Tengger people if you are interested.

You may find various guesthouses and basic hotels located around Mount Bromo area as  that place is popular for tourists. Try to stay nearby so that you can do the morning hike up to catch the sunrise easily. The most popular option for travelers is to sleep in Cemoro Lawang, the village nearest the rim. Life in Cemoro Lawang is oriented around the early mornings and restaurants are open for breakfast serving delicious Indonesian food.
